Sugar Bakery and Coffee House (formerly Craftworks Coffee) is an exciting new café on lower Queen Anne adjacent to the Seattle Center. The design includes a 360-degree counter that puts the barista at the center of the coffee experience. SSF provided the structural engineering for the wood “cloud” over the coffee bar. The cloud is a series of prefabricated wood slats that are supported by a wood frame. The frame is hung from the existing concrete ceiling with steel rods and cables connected to Unistrut hardware. We designed the support structure for the slats and the lateral support structure for the cloud to meet the local seismic code.
