The 1617 Boylston building is a two-story unreinforced masonry (URM) building above a concrete basement. The floors and roof are heavy timber with nail-laminated timber diaphragms supported by large full sawn timber beams and timber trusses. Built around 1921, it was previously used as an auto mechanic shop and a printing shop. The auto shop required ramps to the street which required special structural framing. The building was renovated to provide three levels of office space with exposed timber framing, new braced frame elements, and opening up the attic to showcase the timber roof trusses on the upper floor.
