A Personal Note from Dan Say on His Retirement

After 45 years of structural engineering, including 31 years since founding Swenson Say Faget, I retired on April 3rd, 2026.

It was tough to imagine what the future would hold for me in 1995 when I joined forces with my partners and first started our business. However, looking at this firm 31 years later, and as the last founding principal remaining here, I can only say that I am extremely proud of what this firm has become.

Over the years, I have had the great fortune to work with so many talented architects, designers, contractors, engineers, institutions, organizations, and, of course, staff members.  I think back on my career and smile. Frankly, it feels like yesterday that I was the youngest person in the office, trying to find my way through the engineering consulting profession.  I could not have had my success without great mentors and role models.  Dean Ratti (RIP), Robert Fossatti (RIP), and Gary Swenson (RIP) were important mentors and significant contributors to my development.

As I turn the page on this career, I am confident that this firm will continue to flourish. We have talented leadership that has risen within our ranks. The pieces are in place to maintain our core values and continue pushing the firm toward excellence.  I look forward to seeing this, though from afar.

It is now time to place this part of my life in the rearview mirror and forge ahead with new areas of interest…or better yet, spend more time devoted to current areas of interest that have taken a back seat to my career. I am not fully sure what this will look like, but I look forward to it, nonetheless. (I expect that there will be some fishing involved!). I promised my wife I would spend as much time as possible out of the house.

I will miss my daily interactions with clients, staff, and all of you who influence our built environment in your own way.  I am grateful for my association with you all.

Tight Lines!!!
