Mammoth

Art Installation at CWU

Mammoth

Ellensburg, WA

SSF provided structural design for the “Mammoth” art installation outside the eastern entrance of the newly renovated Samuelson Hall at Central Washington University. The piece was inspired by its namesake, the wooly mammoth, and the discovery of its bones in the Wenas Creek Valley near Selah, Washington.

The tusks made of Cor-ten steel went up over several days, stacked and welded one by one. The total installation area is massive and measures 49 feet x 10 feet. The base of the tusk measures 16 feet high on one side and the tip of the other is 25 feet.

The installation was designed and fabricated by Ilan Averbuch in his Long Island, New York studio.  Averbuch is a sculptor who grew up in Israel, attended university in England and the United States, and specializes in large-scale outdoor sculptures made from raw materials.
