The Haring Center for Inclusive Education at the University of Washington provides early childhood education to children with and without disabilities, advances research in inclusive learning, and trains education professionals in proven practices to support every child’s potential. The center is home to the Experimental Education Unit (EEU), a school serving children from birth to kindergarten, including those on the autism spectrum and others not served in mainstream education.
SSF provided structural engineering services for the renovation of the Haring Center, which included substantial upgrades to improve building performance and meet current code requirements. The project involved replacing or reinforcing foundations, shear walls, beams, headers, and columns, installing a new roof, and upgrading electrical and mechanical systems to enhance the building’s environmental footprint. The project achieved LEED Gold certification.
The renewed facility supports the Haring Center’s mission by creating contemporary classrooms and collaborative spaces that enhance efficiency, creativity, and inclusivity—ensuring that all children can learn, play, and grow together.
