Port Townsend City Hall

seismic analysis and design for an historic building

Port Townsend City Hall

Port Townsend, WA

Built in the 1890’s, Port Townsend City Hall is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. SSF provided the seismic analysis and design for this two-story unreinforced masonry structure constructed. The seismic analysis utilized site specific seismic information and incorporated the results of in-situ material testing. The analysis followed the approach outlined in FEMA-356, Prestandard and Commentary for the Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings. The original gable roof and attic was removed in the 1940s and a replacement is being investigated. The project also included the schematic design of a new annex directly adjacent to the historic city hall building. The new annex structure allowed engineers the unique opportunity to buttress the Old City Hall with very limited disruption to the historic fabric of the original building.
