LIHI’s Sand Point Cottages

LIHI’s Sand Point Cottages

Seattle, WA

The Sand Point Cottage Community is a 22-cottage development owned by the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), designed by Karen DeLucas Architecture, and built by Buchanan General Contracting. Located within Magnuson Park, the development serves families with children, seniors, veterans, and people living with disabilities who were previously unhoused.

The home design is traditional, with a sheltering gable roof and front porch representative of houses in the region. The extra height in the living room creates a feeling of spaciousness. Each building is approximately 500 square feet and has one bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, a loft, and a covered front porch. The design intent of the neighborhood is to foster a sense of community while offering a degree of privacy and security. Six of the cottages were built in modules off-site by students in construction trade pre-apprenticeship programs.
