House in Hawai’i

House in Hawai’i

Hawai'i

Aloha from Hawai’i! SSF teamed with Hoshide Wanzer Architects on this 6,500 SF stunning fusion of nature and structure perched on a steep forested slope between the ocean and mountains. The layout features a central family area, private spaces, an open veranda, and lofted children’s bedrooms. Taking design inspiration from the hala tree and built with robust materials like Alaskan yellow cedar, Ipe, black locust, and concrete ensures resilience to the climate and pays homage to the island’s natural beauty. The house is lifted off the ground on piers to minimize the disruption of inclement weather and protected by a single large canopy. The main living space structure includes a single shed roof surrounded by windows with a large, cantilevered lanai. The roof and floor framing are glulam rafters supported on steel beams and columns. Below the high shed roof are several smaller wood-framed areas.
