PSE Baker Clubhouse Historic Renovation

PSE Baker Clubhouse Historic Renovation

Concrete, WA

Built in 1914, the historic Baker Clubhouse originally served as an office and laboratory for the Washington Portland Cement Company. In 1925, Puget Sound Energy purchased the property and converted it to a bunkhouse for use by construction workers building the Upper Baker Dam.

This 2500 SF renovation project transformed the concrete structure into a Visitor’s Center where people learn about the cultural and industrial history of the area. The design included strengthening the clubhouse structure by adding columns in the lower level to convert the building from office to assembly use. The seismic evaluation met ASCE41’s Tier 1 performance objective for Life-Safety.

The steel and concrete bridge from the Clubhouse to the Interpretive Overlook required structural strengthening with new posts and footings. The wood-framed garage was built in 1925 and required a seismic renovation and restoration. The project included relocating a historic cottage and reusing the historic foundation for a new wood-framed picnic shelter/restroom.
