Longbranch, WA
This project is the adaptive reuse of a 7100 SF 1939 schoolhouse for community use. The historic structure is a large one-story building with an elevated performance space at one end and a kitchen at the other. Log trusses with original cedar shakes visible from the inside support the A-frame roof. The design solution for a more energy-efficient space includes over-framing the existing roof from above, creating room for new insulation, lighting, and heating and cooling elements while preserving the historic character of the underside of the roof. Upgrading all the existing truss joint connections provides the additional support required for the new over-roof structure.
