Entrance Houses by Beliz Brother

Mercer Island, WA

Beliz Brother creates elegant sculptural objects inspired by natural forms, often in contrast to their architectural settings. At the west entrance of the Mercer Island Sound Transit Station is a bottle-brush-like cluster of oars suspended above the entrance staircase – a reference to the island’s boating culture. A second sculpture at the east entrance will be a delicate, balancing form of simple shapes, suggesting the bobbing of a boat upon the water.

Beliz Brother is an award-winning artist from Seattle. Known for engaging and thoughtful art that draws upon and reflects the experiences of different communities, Brother’s commissions include site-specific and integrated projects for Seattle City Hall; the University of Texas San Antonio; The Tech Museum of Innovation, San Jose; the Seattle Opera House, Seattle; and the Metro Transit in St. Louis, among many others. She has received awards for her work, including a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Grant.
