Upgrades planned at historic Beacon Hill property

In a recent newsletter, Historic Seattle announced a series of planned upgrades at its Garden House property in 2024.

Also known as the Turner-Koepf House, the historic 4,420-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story building was built at 2336 15th Ave. S. in 1886 and has been a prominent feature of south Beacon Hill for generations.

Historic Seattle acquired the landmarked property in 2021. Since then, the nonprofit has overseen initial improvements aimed at making the building safe for immediate occupancy and use and has leased the space to coworking and event rental company Work and Play Lounge (WAPL).

Next year, Historic Seattle plans to increase site security and signage at the home, to install a new roof and to undertake window and carpentry repair. The Garden House will also get a lick of new paint. In addition, a new ADA-compliant ramp will be installed to provide accessible entry along with a new ADA-compliant restroom. Upgrades to the kitchen, the installation of new electrical systems throughout, and the update of floor and wall finishes are also planned as part of a phased rehabilitation of the building.

The Garden House and its grounds were landmarked by the Seattle Landmarks and Preservation Board in 2019. Prior to landmarking and Historic Seattle’s acquisition, the home had been threatened with significant redevelopment, when a previous owner wanted to turn part of the property into townhomes.
