SSF provided a seismic retrofit study and rehabilitation of the John A. Cherberg Building on the Capitol Campus in Olympia. The building is a four-story concrete structure with a full basement, and with a concrete slab on grade and conventional concrete spread footings. The seismic analysis was performed with a dynamic computer model of the building and existing lateral force resisting elements were evaluated per FEMA-356. The seismic retrofit contained three major parts—three new concrete shear walls to enhance the building’s lateral capacity, a recommendation for soils investigation, and a program for testing the strength of non-structural hollow clay tile partition walls.
