Archery Summit

Dayton, Oregon

SSF provided structural engineering services for a new guest tasting facility at Archery Summit Winery in Dayton, Oregon, in partnership with Heliotrope Architects.  Visitors enjoy expansive views of the Willamette Valley from the new tasting room, which sits on the only flat area available at the site. The structure features large cantilevers, a thin roof profile, and a 100-foot-long glass wall with sliding panels that create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. A continuous skylight opposite the window wall brings additional daylight into the space. The tasting room is located in front of an existing cave and adjacent to a wood-framed structure. The roof is framed with steel beams and cold-formed metal decking over the conditioned space. A 4-inch-diameter steel tube colonnade at the entry supports the roof while meeting the design intent for minimal structure. An exposed X-brace at the skylight transfers wind and seismic loads to the existing concrete masonry retaining walls at the north side of the building. By utilizing these retaining walls and retrofitting existing wood-framed walls to the west, the design opens the south side of the tasting room to the landscape, creating a welcoming and visually open experience.
