gym and classroom addtions, and existing building renovations

Bothell High School

Bothell, WA

This renovation/addition includes construction of a new 21,000-square-foot gymnasium, 12,000 square feet of new classroom facilities and a renovation of 24,000 square feet of existing facilities. The project utilizes a CMU block system in the gymnasium, which enhances the insulating quality of the walls and is accomplished by including a foam layer within the cells of the CMU block. The area left for grout and reinforcement is reduced and presents more of a challenge to the designer in terms of wall strength and flexibility. A detailed review of the owners’ intentions was evaluated prior to the design so that an appropriate live load could be established for the second floor of the new locker room building. This second floor is used for a weight room and aerobic-training classes. The construction also includes the partial demolition of the existing gym. The music and choir wing of that existing facility remained and was retrofitted to stand on its own.
