St. Joseph’s Church

seismic analysis and subsequent renovation projects

St. Joseph’s Church

Seattle, WA

Part of a detailed seismic assessment of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Seattle, SSF developed a three-dimensional mathematic model to analyze the behavior of the church during an earthquake. The results of this analysis led to the production of preliminary design information used to develop a budget for future renovation. Additional work on the church was later conducted for the Centennial Church Restoration and Renewal Project. This restoration included seismic improvements to the building, specifically the tall concrete tower elements. Design recommendations were made for ADA improvements to the altar platform, a permanent location for the choir, new electrical and lighting systems, an additional skylight, a permanent Baptistry, relocation of the existing organ and general improvements to the worship space and lower level.
