Originally funded by Fire Facilities and Emergency Response Levy Program approved in 2003, the Ballard Fire Station 18 was one of the last stations to be renovated. The scope included a seismic upgrade, renovation of interior spaces and additions. Improvements included providing individual bunk rooms for all crew members, light- and temperature-controlled bunker gear storage, and expanded maintenance facilities. Envelope improvements increased the building’s overall thermal performance and a new elevator made all floors accessible. New energy efficient HVAC systems were installed. The existing reinforced concrete fire station structure was analyzed using ASCE 31-03 and ASCE 41-06, state of the art seismic evaluation documents. The building and 5-story hose tower structures were strengthened to meet Immediate Occupancy requirements. The project was designed to LEED Gold standards.
